We, the educators of Dixie County, want our schools to offer to each child, at his/her own level, those activities and experiences which will enable him/her to become a well-adjusting individual, living productively and harmoniously, regardless of environmental change. We think that this can be most nearly attained in an environment which provides a variety of worthwhile experiences and in which the student feels at home. We believe that each student is different and we seek to provide experiences permitting growth and development in terms of his/her own personal interests and abilities.
We think that proficiency in basic academic skills helps in ideal adjustment, and is of vital importance, but it should be only a part of the broader program. We therefore hold that vocational offerings should be broad and varied to provide salable skill training to both the academically inclined and to the student whose formal education terminates with high school graduation.
We believe that regardless of the student’s professional or vocational direction, he/she should be led to an understanding and appreciation of human achievement in the natural sciences, the social studies, the humanities and the arts. The cultural appreciation might later afford the student an avenue of self expression in the creative use of his/her leisure time.
We further believe that it is the responsibility of the educator to help the student discover the true meaning of democratic living in human relationships—familial and societal; and to encourage the student to practice and propagate concepts and behavior based on ideal of democracy and patriotism.
To implement this philosophy, it is necessary that educators, parents, lay citizens and students work in harmony with due respect for different opinions.
